What do You Really Want?
This Week We’re Doing:
What we want is the most important thing about us. Our want drives the decisions we make and the life we live. As we honestly step back ask ourselves the question, “What do I really want?”, we might not get the answer we thought we would. Do we really want to see Jesus, do we really want to know God? Sometimes our “wants” get stuck on superficial things, but those things pass away. Those things crumble and fail. As those things fade away, Jesus never does. He is our constant and he is where our true satisfaction is found. This week, we are stepping back to ponder the question of what we truly want.
The Fast:
This week, we invite you to join us in fasting caffeine and sweets. This particular fast was chosen because it represents a common comfort to which our culture runs for distraction. The hope for each is that a season of unplugging from the background buzz will be leveraged for the sake of communing with the Lord. Therefore, we should consider ways in which we can leverage the fast to engage in deeper prayer, study, community, and meditation with Christ.
“He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but he has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else.”
— John 3:31
This Week We’re Reading:
This week we are continuing our journey by reading from the life of Christ in Luke 11:1-13. Click the “Read Now” button to be directed to the passage.
This Week We’re Asking:
This week we talked about how John says that God needs to become greater and greater and we need to become less and less. Here are a few questions to lead a discussion with your family this week:
What are some of the things in your life that are really valuable to you?
Is there something in your life you really want? Does that align with what God is speaking to you? Is what you want leading you closer to God?
How can we help each other as a family to become less and God become more in our lives?
Preparing for Sunday:
If Jesus Himself needed someone to turn the soil of hearts and minds before the seed of His word came, shouldn’t we do the same?
This Sunday, we are going to talk about how our minds and thoughts help us or keep us from seeing Jesus Christ.
So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.
-1 Peter 1:13
God is on the move. We are too. So, prepare your mind for action this week. Spend some time before Sunday meditating on that verse. Pray it, asking Him to help you to put ALL your hope in His salvation to come. Not part of it. Not most of it. All of it.
