This Week We’re Asking:

This parable has a lot going on! There are some bridesmaids who are waiting for the bridegroom. Some of them didn’t take enough oil and weren’t prepared, while some of them were! As they waited, they fell asleep, kind of got distracted, and then had to go get more oil. While they were gone the groom came and they missed what they were initially waiting for! This is a great example of what we do sometimes when it comes to our faith. Jesus has promised us that He will return, but it is easy for us to lose focus, get distracted and not be prepared! This parable is a great reminder of how we should live our lives!

  1. Why did the 5 foolish bridesmaids miss the bridegroom?

  2. What do you think it means to be prepared for when Jesus comes back?

  3. What do you think you can do to help you stay focused on being ready for Jesus to return?

This Week We’re Doing:

In this parable, the bridesmaids didn’t know exactly when the groom would be arriving. They only knew that they wanted to be ready for when he did get there! Even though they were waiting intently, some of them missed his arrival because they got distracted and weren’t prepared. Through this parable, Jesus shows us that we should live our lives like Jesus is returning tomorrow, but plan like Jesus isn’t returning for 100 years! We don’t know how long we have here, but we do want to do everything we can to share the Gospel with as many people as we can!

Heres the challenge!

We believe that one way we can prepare for Jesus return is to share the Gospel with as many people as we can. One great way to share the Gospel is by telling people our testimony. The Family Challenge this week is to spend some time together and share your testimony of what God has done in your life with each other. Once you have shared, encourage each other to share with someone outside of your family!

This Week We’re Memorizing:

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.”

Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT

BONUS!

Jesus was a master storyteller, and many of his most well-known teachings were told as parables. But these stories were designed to do much more than simply "teach." Jesus said the parables were designed to both reveal and conceal his message about the arrival of God's Kingdom. In this video, we explore the main themes in Jesus' parables and ask why he used them as the primary vehicle for his message. Check it out right here!
