A Walk in the Park (#8)

When Northeast Community Park’s development began, one of the things I most looked forward to was the completion of its trails. I have since made it a point to walk there regularly as part of my fitness routine. Though I always enjoy walking in the park, it is especially nice when I see others actively using the trails as well. I’ve shared a ‘hello’ with runners, dog walkers, and with couples from the nearby neighborhoods out for a stroll.

In recent weeks, it has been fun to see cyclists enjoying the trails as well. These trails, free from traffic, provide an ideal space for families with small children to bike together. The smooth concrete surfaces provide a safe and comfortable ride for cyclists of all skill levels.  

Whether you're on a bicycle or a recumbent trike (like my husband and me), cycling is a rewarding way to get and stay healthy. It is a great low-impact exercise that offers a wealth of benefits. Research shows that cycling thirty minutes daily can increase cardiovascular endurance, boost muscle strength and flexibility, improve mobility and balance, and even reduce cholesterol levels. Cycling also releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones that help relieve stress and promote positive feelings.

In the busyness of our lives, it is important to be intentional about creating time for wellness. The park provides an accessible and enjoyable option for all, making it an ideal setting for incorporating healthy activities. Next time you plan your fitness routine, consider a visit to the park. Whether you enjoy a leisurely walk, an invigorating run, or take your bike for a spin on the trails, you may discover it’s a perfect way to enrich your wellness regimen. 

A Walk in the Park (#7)

A park can be beautiful in any season, but I discovered that a walk in the park on a cloudy day has an enchanting beauty all its own.

As I arrived at the park earlier this week, storm clouds were gathering on the horizon. I decided to walk anyway, hoping I would get some steps in before I got doused by the coming rain. I soon became enthralled by the subtle changes in the park’s ambiance. The building storm clouds added a unique backdrop to the surroundings. Without the bright sunshine, the landscape was softened, colors were muted, and every shade of green looked richer.

Flowers I had noticed on previous walks seemed more delicate as they swayed in gentle breezes that signaled the coming storm. Occasionally, the scent of impending rain wafted past, creating a pleasant reminder of rainy days gone by. A tranquil peace hovered over the area – a waiting quiet – unmarred by the usual sounds of the day.

Beneath the cloudy sky, the park offered a sense of peace and reflection. It spoke a gentle reminder that nature’s beauty can be found even on days when the sun isn’t shining and the sky isn’t clear. Those quieter, magical moments often leave the most lasting impressions, much as they do in our lives.

When lightning became visible in the gathering clouds, I took one last look around and quickened my pace back to my car. I drove away slowly, carrying with me a new appreciation for the subtle, peaceful beauty of a cloudy day. I knew I would hold those special moments close to my heart for some time to come.

A Walk in the Park (#6)

The pickleball courts are being painted and sealed this week and the basketball goals have been installed. So. Much. Progress.

During my afternoon walk yesterday, Joe Sardo kindly let me hop on board the lift to watch the work happening on the pickleball court below, offering a very different and interesting perspective. The colors on the court are incredibly vibrant! Seeing it all coming together almost tempted me to learn to play pickleball. ALMOST. Not quite. I will happily enjoy watching others play, though, before too long.

The basketball court is set to be striped and sealed soon, maybe as early as next week. Additionally, more sand will be added to the sand volleyball court with equipment and fencing to follow. This part of the project is getting much closer to completion. Actual games on the courts will have to wait until everything is fully cured, but Joe anticipates the courts could be ready for use in as little as thirty days.

Volunteers who can set aside an hour or two now and then to water the new trees and other plantings are still needed. It is an easy task, I’m told. Just a little instruction and you are good to go. To back up my words, I decided to add my name to the volunteer list. I hope to see more names added soon! Care to join the team?

A Walk in the Park (#5)

Twenty-five volunteers participated in Saturday morning’s Serve Day at Northeast Community Park. Eleven of these were first-timers on the team. Their combined efforts provided almost a hundred hours of focused work in the park. All the planned projects for the day were completed, and new connections and friendships were forged. What a great way to build the sense of community we hope to see in the park!   

DO YOU HAVE AN HOUR TO SPARE? With the intense heat, keeping the new planting areas watered is especially important. We need volunteers to drive the water-tank-equipped UTV and water from spot to spot. If you have any hour available, any day of the week, contact Joe Sardo at [email protected] to volunteer. Instead of just walking in the park this week, maybe join the team and take a ride, too.

A Walk in the Park (#4)

During a morning walk with a friend in a local, well-established park, I found myself drawn in by the community atmosphere. Enormous trees set the scene, providing a sense of peace and welcome shade. Landscaped areas added color and visual interest. There were people all along the way, though it never felt crowded. Some were running while others strolled casually, often nodding or saying hello. Many were walking their dogs, as my friend was doing, and we often stopped to chat and share comments about our pets. Happy children’s voices could be heard in the background. The shared community in that place made it feel welcoming.

As I walked the trails in our park a few days later, I thought about that previous walk. I stopped and looked around as I imagined what was to come. What would Northeast Community Park be like in five years? In ten, or twenty?

When I mentioned my thoughts to Joe Sardo, Project Manager for the park, he commented that building a park isn’t the same as constructing a building that goes up in a few months and is complete. A park takes years to develop, he said, and it grows and changes all along the way.

Though I enjoyed my walk in the mature park, I love my regular walks through this new park. I am excited to think about what is coming even while I enjoy it today. I look forward to watching the trees grow and begin to provide shade for the benches and walkways. By next spring and summer, we will see the effects of the hard work put into the landscaped areas as plants and flowers become more established. The community gardens will enable many to learn how to grow their food. And the playground and sports areas will provide hours and hours of happy play for the community's families.

Our vision statement says, “The Northeast Community Park exists to provide a safe, inviting, and open space for our community to gather, grow, and get to know each other.” I smile as I watch the park take shape and dream about the community atmosphere that will develop in this place in the months and years ahead. What fun to get to watch it happen right before our eyes!

A Walk in the Park (#3)

It is a wonder what you can discover during a leisurely walk in the park!

One afternoon this past week I stopped by the park to get in some of my daily steps. As I walked, pondering why I hadn’t opted for a walk in the morning when the temperatures were cooler, I noticed someone working in one of the landscaped areas. I had been watching the activity around the sports courts, but I had not noticed anyone working on the grounds. As I neared the area, I realized the person was Stephanie Peters. She was busy sprinkling something on the mounded planting bed. Of course, I had to ask questions! Enquiring minds, right?

Stephanie, I learned, oversees the landscaping and grounds for both the park and the church. She was adding fertilizer to some newly planted beds near one of the entrances. Thanks to her efforts last year, the park received a $1600 grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation to add native plantings to the four park entrances. Those areas had just been completed, and the MDC representative was on the way to look over the work. Not surprisingly, all the beds were approved on Friday. It will be fun to watch these new plants grow and become part of the park’s aesthetic, and we have Stephanie to thank!

Stephanie is one of those special people who diligently works behind the scenes to design, create, and maintain the grounds in the park. Together with many others, her efforts are shaping a natural beauty the community will enjoy for many years to come.   

A Walk in the Park (#2)

Take a walk in the park this week, and you’ll see just how fast everything is coming together. The fencing is in place for the basketball court and the pickleball court will be done next – likely this week. KCI, our concrete company, is working on the sand volleyball court and pouring more sidewalks. Before we know it there will be actual sports on the courts! (Did you see what I did there?)

From an observer’s viewpoint, it is amazing to see it all take shape so quickly after waiting for many months for it to happen. But we know that while we were sitting back and watching, others were in the background plugging away at the details to get it done. And they have done an amazing job!

If you are walking in the park when folks are working there, you’ll likely notice right there in the middle of it all, one of the people who has made it happen. Joe Sardo, the Project Manager, will be overseeing the action and making sure it is done right. He has been a major force in planning, organizing, and keeping everything on track – and we are fortunate to have him directing the team. If you happen to see Joe, be sure to tell him ‘Thanks’ for all the hours of preparation and hard work he has invested in Northeast Community Park.

A Walk in the Park

Northeast Community Park is coming alive! The background hum of machinery could be heard in the park this week as concrete was being poured for the pickleball, basketball, and sand volleyball courts, as well as additional sidewalks. Soon the equipment will be installed for each court, and early next month they should be ready for use. WHAT?

Phase 2 is well underway, folks. The grass is growing, flowers are blooming, and trees are beginning to dot the landscape. Several of the planned benches have been installed for those who need a breather along the way – or those who just want to sit and enjoy the park.

Northeast Community Park Receives $57,000 Grant

A major chunk of Phase 1 of the Northeast Community Park is the completion of new concrete walking paths. This milestone achievement was made possible in large part due to a substantial grant of $57,000 from the Department of Conservation, and we feel it's essential to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate this incredible support.

Covering 50% of the total cost, this grant was instrumental in bringing our vision for more durable, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing walking paths to fruition. It's a prime example of how collaborative efforts can lead to tangible improvements in our community spaces.

The Tail of the Dog Park Vote

We've got some "ruff" news to share. Despite our best efforts and your pawesome support, we didn't win the Petsafe grant for the Northeast Community Park Dog Park. Yep, it seems our bark was louder than our bite this time!

But hey, don't tuck your tails just yet! 🚫🐩 We’re not rolling over on this one. Every wagging tail, every excited bark, and each of your enthusiastic votes showed the world that Springfield is a community that loves its four-legged friends.

We might not have fetched the big prize, but we've definitely sniffed out something special – a community of passionate, dog-loving, vote-casting superheroes! 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️

So, let's give ourselves a round of appaws for the incredible effort. Remember, in the world of dog parks and community spirit, it's not always about winning, but about the journey and the furry friends we make along the way.

Springfield a Finalist for Bark Park

Hold onto your leashes, folks, because PetSafe, the grandmaster of pet perks since ’98, is throwing a bone unlike any other. They've unleashed the beast of all contests: PetSafe Unleashed, a dog park's ticket to a whopping $50,000 treasure trove. Yeah, you read it right. That's five-zero-zero-zero-zero, enough to make any tail wag!

And get this: our very own Springfield, Missouri, with its Northeast Community Park, has been handpicked as a top dog to fetch the grand prize.

We are a finalist for a place where dogs can frolic free, sniff to their heart’s content, and maybe even chase a squirrel or two (or at least dream about it).

The dogs of Northeast Springfield are putting on their best "sad puppy eyes" – yes, the ones you can't resist – because their dreams of a new dog park are hanging on by a leash!

From a live nativity scene that transports you to the heart of Bethlehem, to merry carolers serenading with age-old Christmas tunes, the evening promises a magical journey for young and old alike.

For the Little Ones:

• Inflatable Winter Wonderland: Watch the kids bounce and play in our fun inflatables.

• Christmas Train Experience: All aboard! Children can embark on a mini journey reminiscent of the beloved Christmas story.

• Pictures with Santa: Ensure those picture-perfect moments with Saint Nick himself. Don't forget to whisper your Christmas wishes!

Culinary Delights:

Yep, that's right—Northside Community Park has completed the much-awaited concrete walking paths!

• 3,987 linear feet of concrete has been poured and is waiting for you.

• That's a whopping 20,185 square feet of concrete, people!

• You could play at least four games of soccer side by side on that. Or lay down a ton of hopscotch games. But let’s be honest, we’d rather you walk or jog on it.

The Marathoner's Dream: The full 1-mile loop for those who want to take in all the sights and sounds our beautiful park has to offer.

The Sprinter’s Delight: The 1/10-mile loop. Ideal for a super-quick cardio burst or for those "I just want to stretch my legs" moments.

Each morning, the sun glistens off the new paths as more and more of our cherished neighbors (yes, you!) are spotted taking advantage of this fantastic upgrade. Whether you're an early bird catching the sunrise or a night owl watching the sunset, these paths are here to guide your steps.

So, lace up those sneakers, leash up your pups, grab a buddy, or take a solo venture! It's time to celebrate our community's latest achievement, one step at a time. And hey, if you're feeling extra edgy, maybe throw in a little dance or hopscotch as you go.

Green Beginnings

One of the core values of the Northeast Community Park is that “fresh air, soft grass, and a place to play make happy, healthy people.”

That’s why this is such an exciting update straight from the ground beneath your feet. Life is sprouting! That's right; the grass is officially on its way!

We have planted 200 pounds of grass seed, and we couldn't be happier to report that our first batch is now starting to show some promising signs of life. It may not look like much yet, but to us, it's a celebration of life, the first step towards a vibrant, green carpet that will soon cover our beloved park.

So, what's the big deal about grass sprouting, you might wonder? Well, let us tell you – it's all about the promise of what's to come. Those tiny green shoots may be small and unassuming, but they represent the beginning of something beautiful. It's a symbol of the effort, love, and care we put into making this park a better place for all of you.

We have plans – big plans. Thousands more pounds of grass seed are going to find their new home in our park in the months to come. We're talking lush, green meadows, soft and inviting under your feet, perfect for picnics, play, and relaxation. It's like a makeover for your favorite outdoor hangout, and we're thrilled to be a part of it!

As the seasons change, so will we. Our grass will grow thicker, taller, and greener, providing you with a fresh and inviting place to connect with nature. Barbara Carlson: Our Bloomin' Park Superstar 🌼

We want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on someone who has been spreading joy and beauty throughout the park. Barbara Carlson is the sunshine on our flower beds, and we can't say thank you enough!

Since spring, Barbara has been a true gardening superhero, gracing us with her green thumbs twice a week – every Monday and Thursday. Armed with her own tools and a heart full of passion, she has transformed our park into a floral wonderland, one petal at a time.

Pavilion Flower Beds

From 9 AM to 2 PM, Barbara dedicates herself wholeheartedly to her mission, planting vibrant flowers around the pavilion without ever taking a break. That's five hours of non-stop gardening, folks! 🌻

But it's not just Barbara's remarkable dedication that sets her apart; it's her infectious enthusiasm and unflagging positive attitude. Rain or shine, she's here with a smile that's as radiant as the blooms she tends to. Her energy is like plant food for the soul of our park, inspiring us all to appreciate and cherish this green oasis in our neighborhood.

We often say that parks like ours are the heart of a community, and Barbara has certainly made our park beat even stronger. With every blossom that unfurls, she adds a burst of color to our lives, reminding us of the beauty that can be found in the simple act of caring for nature.

Deanna Price: North Springfield Champion

Deanna Price, owner-operator of Culver's on North Glenstone, is a remarkable community champion. Her unwavering dedication to North Springfield and support for local schools, including recent fundraisers, have made a significant impact. Deanna represents Culver's with values of community and generosity, setting an inspiring example for all. Thank you, Deanna, for being a beacon of hope in our community.

Supporting Local Schools

Deanna's commitment to her community shines brightly through her support for local schools. She loves Truman Elementary, Fremont Elementary, Pleasantview Elementary and Middle School, and Hillcrest High School and has hosted events and given to make a difference in the lives of students and educators.

Deanna's recent involvement in a fundraiser for the Northeast Community Park, organized by T's Disability Acceptance, is another shining example of her dedication. Together, they raised an impressive $450 to support the park's mission of inclusivity and accessibility.

T’s Disability Acceptance 5K

Emma Holdway is at it again! 🥳 She is the proud founder of “T's Disability Acceptance,” an organization striving for all things inclusion, specifically accessible, and inclusive playgrounds.

She’s come a long way in her mission, hosting events and organizing multiple fundraisers to make her dream a reality. And her biggest event of the year is just around the corner: the T's Disability Acceptance Second Annual 5k, which is happening on September 30th! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

On Sunday, September 8th, 2024, we will open our gates to the public, unveiling both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of this fantastic recreational space.
